Necessary for bone growth, testicular and ovarian function, embryonic development, and tissue differentiation. Aids in the treatment of emphysema and hyperthyroidism.

References and Research Info

Beta-carotene is a previtamin A compound found in plants, the human body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. Earl Mindell prefers the beta-carotene form of vitamin A because it does not have the same toxicity potential as does vitamin A. Also, beta-carotene is a preventative for certain cancers and helps to lower cholesterol. The RDA for vitamin A is 5,000 IU's for males over 11 years and 4.000 IU's for females over 11 years. Smokers may need to supplement with vitamin A because tobacco decreases its absorption. Alcohol also diminishes the body's ability to use vitamin A. Deficiency of this vitamin may lead to the loss of vitamin C.
