Colon and Liver Cleanser Report
Many chronic physical and mental disorders are the direct result of an overloaded liver filled with toxic food fragments and chemicals. The liver is probably the organ most assaulted by our lifestyles of stress, junk foods, drugs and alcohol, industrial toxins, and air pollution. We need to protect ourselves by helping the liver with its natural detoxification and regenerative processes. Good nutrition and herbal preparations will provide this support.
Liver congestion contributes to an estimated 20 million victims of gallstones in America each year (500,000 have their gallbladders removed), to high cholesterol which results in strokes and heart disease, and to liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and to the inflammation of the gall bladder.
Some Warning Signs of a Congested, Toxic Liver
• Feeling tired after a meal.• Chronic fatigue.
• Mood swings, including depression or irrational anger flare-ups.
• Digestive symptoms including nausea, foul-smelling gas and bloating, loss of appetite, constipation, and/or diarrhea.
• Sore feet, muscle or joint pain.
• Wounds slow in healing.
• Skin disorders including acne, boils, psoriasis, eczema, and jaundice.
Some of the Functions the Liver Performs
Weighing about 3 to 5 pounds, the liver is the largest organ in the body and requires about 12% of all your body’s energy to perform over 500 different jobs in regulating your metabolism every day!• It converts the thyroid hormone thyroxine into triiodothyronine, without which energy-depleting hypothyroidism results.
• Creates Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) from glutathione and chromium, essential for insulin to maintain proper blood sugar levels.
• Breaks down hormones for elimination from the body after they’ve been used (insulin, estrogen, aldosterone, and adrenaline).
• Manufactures bile salts that dissolve toxins before they are secreted into the intestines and break down fats and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) for absorption into the digestive tract.
• Stores iron and various vitamins, such as A, D, and B-12.
• Detoxifies ammonia, which occurs as a toxic by-product or fermented food and protein metabolism in the bowel.
• Must break down everything that is toxic or poisonous to the body from metabolic wastes to insecticides on food, to alcohol and drugs, to chemicals used in industrial and food processing, plus many more. Failure to do this important job usually results in death in 12 to 24 hours.
• This main glucose buffer is the key regulator of blood sugar due to its job of producing, storing, and releasing glycogen, which is the form able to be stored by the body as a half-day’s supply of sugar.
• Major immune system organ has "Kupffer" cells, which are responsible for the filtration of all blood (heavy with foods and bacteria absorbed into the blood during digestion) and for the removal of 99% of bacteria.
Risk Factors
Let’s examine who’s at risk for "sub-clinical chronic liver dysfunction", which means the symptoms are too mild to be detected by usual clinical tests or examinations.• Heavy coffee drinkers.
• Those who regularly consume fried "junk foods", i.e. doughnuts, chips, etc. cooked in fat or oil, a leading source of lipid peroxides, or rancid fats, which are toxic to the liver.
• Persistent alcohol users. The liver changes alcohol into toxic acetaldehyde.
• Birth control pill users. As the liver breaks down estrogen, the byproduct, estradiol, is produced and can be toxic for persons deficient in B-vitamins and protein.
• Candida patients: Yeast causes fermentation of dietary sugar, which turns into the liver-toxic acetaldehyde and makes liver-harmful ammonia in the gut as well. Substances from dead yeast also overload the liver’s immune cells.
• Arthritis sufferers and other chronic aspirin/Tylenol takers (8 to 12 daily). This "safe" drug (Tylenol) can damage the liver with prolonged high dosages.
• Long-term prescription drug users, i.e. Dilantin and Phenobarbitol (for epilepsy) Nizoral (for Candida) and Chlorpromazine (a tranquilizer) to name a few. Those so-called "recreational" drugs, like Cocaine, tobacco and Amphetamine MDMA, etc. also risk liver damage.
• Farm workers and produce handlers exposed to pesticides DDT, Chlordane, Lindane, Aldrin, 2-4-5-T and Dioxin which all tend to collect in body fat.
• Service and industrial workers who are customarily exposed to heavy metals (lead, mercury, and cadmium), radioactive chemicals, solvents (carbon tetrachloride and TCE), spray paints, and chemicals in hair salons.
• Auto mechanics and gas station attendants who are exposed to gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil, degreasing chemicals, etc. which are absorbed through the skin or by the inhalation of fumes.
How to Detoxify
When planning to rid the liver of harmful toxins and poisons, three actions of the liver must be the focal point for support and stimulation:1. Bile production and flow must be encouraged. By supporting this activity, the "liver congestion" is prevented, the toxin and cholesterol excretion is increased, and there is a noted decrease in fatty deposits. A good quality fiber supplement containing psyllium would be good to ensure that bile acids and toxins were bound and eliminated, thus preventing their reabsorbing and the forming of cancer producing compounds.
2. The main liver cells, hepatocytes, must be protected from damage caused by inflammation and must be stimulated to regenerate and multiply, thus functioning at optimum.
3. The immune system cells, Kupffer cells, should be encouraged to capture and digest toxins and allergy-causing substances. Adequate amounts of vitamins and trace minerals should be taken before and during the detoxification process, as well as quality proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to insure optimal results.
Detoxification, Lipotropic (dissolves & mobilizes fat), & Liver Herbs
Dandelion RootThe dandelion is a perennial plant found almost everywhere though not occurring in the Southern Hemisphere. Having a leaf the shape of a lion’s tooth, the name is taken from the French "dent-de-lion" meaning "tooth-of-the-lion". It increases bile production and stimulates its flow to the gallbladder, where it also causes contractions and the release of bile from there. The polysaccharide insulin found in this root is respected for its white blood cell and immune-boosting properties.
This root is also higher in beta-carotene (a powerful antioxidant and precursor to Vitamin A) than what is found in carrots. The leaf of the plant is a powerful diuretic and a delicious salad green eaten in the spring. Dandelion is a very nutritive herb with medicinal benefits; it stimulates the liver and kidneys while absorbing toxins and soothes the digestive tract while promoting healing.

Fringe Tree
A small tree, bearing white flowers in June, like snowdrops, and with large leaves like those of the magnolia, it presents a charming appearance. The bark of the root of this tree has similar properties to thin and increase the flow of bile, while gradually dissolving old gall stones and preventing the formation of new. With sufficient bile flow, fatty foods stop causing digestive problems and fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients are thoroughly absorbed. The liver is no longer backed up by cholesterol, nor is the blood’s circulation clogged by it.
It is a good blood purifier and general tonic. It reduces fevers, has a gentle action on the bowels, aids the kidneys, helps in all liver troubles, jaundice, gall bladder, gall stones and colic. Externally may be used for sores.
Poke Root
This plant should only be used by the well-trained herbalist. Its results can be fatal. In small doses, Poke Root is used as a blood purifier in combination with other herbs such as Red Clover, Echinacea, and Yellow Dock. It is a stimulant for the lymphatic system, and it helps to clear the lymph.
Uses include: tonsillitis, swollen glands, mastitis, mumps, rheumatism and arthritis (due to its stimulating effect on the elimination of tissues), pain, chronic catarrh, respiratory disorders, breast tumors, laryngitis, biliousness, liver and kidney congestion, and skin diseases.
It should not be used more than one gram per day. When used in its higher dosage amounts, it acts as an emetic and a cathartic. Externally it can be used for scabies, eczema, skin infections and parasites, breast tumors, caked breasts, abscesses, and fungal infections. CAUTION: This plant is extremely potent and poisonous if not used appropriately.
Immune-Activating, Blood-Building Herbs
Goldenseal RootThe valuable, golden yellow root of this plant gives it its name. Goldenseal is a native of Canada and the eastern United States. It is found in the rich soil of shady woods and moist places at the edge of wooded lands. It is best when harvested at three years of growth. It has antibiotic properties stronger than many prescription medicines and is able to target unwanted bacteria, as well as protozoa and yeasts. It is unique in that it does not harm the beneficial bacteria necessary in the digestive tract. This alkaloid Berberine has the added benefit of increasing blood flow through the spleen, where it also increases the immune-building activity of the large supply of white blood cells there.
The American Indians valued it highly as a general tonic, intestinal medicine, used internally and externally (wash), for eye problems, and was used as a dye for clothing and weapons. Goldenseal’s special action on the mucus membrane makes it valuable against catarrh, colon, rectum, hemorrhoids, liver disorders, infections of the sinuses (snuffed), gums and mouth (gargle), and eyes. It is antiseptic for sores of the skin, ringworm, skin & stomach ulcers. Asthma, bladder infection, internal bleeding, canker sores, cancer, childhood diseases, circulation, colon inflammation, constipation (chronic), diabetes, eczema, eye infections, hay fever, gastritis, genital disorders, gonorrhea, herpes, liver problems, lymph congestion, mammary and ovarian tumors, menstruation (excessive), ulcers, urethritis, vaginitis, venereal disease.

Astragalus Root
Astragali Radix (Astragalus membranaceus) Chinese name: Huang Ch’i.
Astragalus is one of the most popular herbs used in the Orient. The highest quality roots are large and usually cut into long, thin slices and has a yellow core and a sweet flavor. It is a tonic producing warm energy and specifically tonifying lung, spleen, and triple warmer via meridians. It is especially energizing to young adults, said to be better than ginseng. It is strengthening to arms and legs. It is very useful for those working outside in the cold giving a warm energy.
It tones the protective energy (Wei Ch’i) which is generated in the lungs, stomach and spleen then circulates just under the skin in the subcutaneous tissues providing suppleness to the flesh and adaptive energy to the skin. It fortifies the immune system and is a blood tonic. It helps regulate fluid metabolism relieving fluid retention and bloating. It is helps regulate sugar metabolism and is valuable against diabetes.
An article published in Cancer, a publication of the American Cancer Society, reports that the aqueous extract of Astragalus membranaceus restored the immune functions in 90% of cancer patients studied. The article states that the cellular immune response is usually impaired in cancer patients, especially in those with advanced disease. Immune response is further compromised by radiation and/or chemotherapy. Astragalus has been found to be a "response modifier" which favorably modulates the subnormal immune apparatus of cancer patients.
In studies performed at the National Cancer Institute and five other leading American Cancer Institutes over the past ten years, it has been positively shown that Astragalus strengthens a cancer patients immune system. Researchers believe, on the basis of cell studies, that Astragalus augments those white blood cells that fight disease and removes some of those that make the body more vulnerable to it.
There is clinical evidence that cancer patients given Astragalus during chemotherapy or radiation, both of which reduce the body’s natural immunity while attacking the cancer, recover significantly faster and live longer. It is evident that Astragalus does not directly attack cancers themselves, but instead strengthens the body’s immune system. In these same studies, both in the laboratory and with 572 cancer patients, it also has been found that Astragalus promotes adrenal cortical function, which also is critically diminished in cancer patients. Astragalus also ameliorates bone marrow depression and gastrointestinal toxicity caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Chinese researchers, conducting parallel research, have found that Astragalus enables mice to resist highly infectious viruses and to produce larger amounts of Interferon. Interferon is a vital cellular protein that inhibits viral growth and is believed to be effective against virus-related cancers. Because of Astragalus’ ability to strengthen the immune system, it is now being looked into as a possible treatment for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, better known as AIDS. Astragalus reduces the so-called "T-Suppressor Cells", which inhibits immunity, and are found in high numbers in AIDS patients. T-Suppressor Cells also are more prevalent in the elderly, making them more susceptible to disease. Thus Astragalus is being studied for its potential ability to prolong life.
A group of researchers in Texas reported that when Astragalus extract is added to a culture medium in which human lung cell mass is grown , the cellular aging process appears to be significantly postponed. In two identical groups of cultured cell mass, one treated with Astragalus, and one not, the untreated cells survived 61 to 66 reproductive generations, while the cells treated with Astragalus survived an average of 98 generations - almost double increase in life expectancy.
In a series of articles in the Chinese Medical Journal, doctors at the Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Disease described significant effects of Astragalus against the Coxsackie B virus. Among other things, this virus can cause an infection of the heart called Coxsackie B Viral Myocarditis. This disease has become common in China recently, and there is currently no drug known for effective prophylaxis or treatment.
In 1987 Chinese researchers showed beneficial effects of Astragalus on heart cell cultures infected with Coxsackie B 2 virus (Yang YZ, et al., Chinese Medical Journal. 1987, 107(7): 595). Following up on this research, the same group has released the results of their latest experiments. In another cultured heart cell experiment, Yuan Wei-long et al. demonstrated that Astragalus could reduce cardiac cell damage and changes in electric activity of heart cells. Infected cells that were treated with Astragalus extract maintained more regular rhythms, beating frequency, and beating percentage and showed less cellular damage from the virus infection. (CMJ.1990, 103(3): 177-182). The results of the in vitro experiments were confirmed in another study with Coxsackie B 3 virus-infected mice. Compared with controls, those mice given the Astragalus extract were significantly protected against the effects of the virus.
